The village's name is synonymous with the famous rosé wine, often referred to as "France's premier rosé". The commune of Tavel is surrounded by vineyards and features a great many wine cellars.
The area, inhabited by hunters from times immemorial, gradually began to prosper and by 1750 the village numbered a population of approximately 800. The 19th century proved a golden age for wine growers, and the village's 700 hectares of planted vines made its 1400 inhabitants relatively well off, and Tavel became regarded as one of the wealthier areas from the area known as Côtes du Rhône. Stone quarrying is another of Tavel's assets, and there are a number of marble masons in the village. |
